The National Zoological Park, commonly known as the National Zoo, is one of the oldest zoos in the country and is considered part of the Smithsonian Institution which doesn’t charge admission. Perhaps one of the most popular exhibits at the National Zoo is its Panda Cam. Aside from the celebrity pandas, the zoo hosts many exhibits, education classes, camp and offers plenty of opportunities to volunteer or adopt an animal. Like with any zoo, come many responsibilities. Obviously the everyday care for the animals is most obvious, but also minding the safety of each animal is important even if it’s not the exhibit animals themselves.
How does Film Room Glass Tinting fit into the story? We’re currently working closely with the National Zoo to help identify ‘at risk’ displays and applying a special bird-striped pattern film designed to help prevent birds from flying into the glass. You’ve probably seen these types of preventive stickers or decals on buildings, overpasses or even homes, so it only makes sense to meet the animals where they are to combat the problem.

That’s how many birds die from crashing into windows in the United States each year – nearly a BILLION birds. This represents as much as 10 percent of the entire bird population and is the leading killer of birds in the country behind the number one menace: cats.
Three Categories
Buildings four to 11 stories tall account for about 56 percent of bird deaths
Buildings between 1 and 3 stories account for approximately 44 percent of bird deaths, and
Skyscrapers represent less than 1 percent
So from this breakdown, “zoos” fall into the second category, which accounts for 44 percent of deaths, or 440,000,000. While it doesn’t apply to all glass enclosures, we’ve been working on the exhibits for the Orangutan, Gorilla, Sloth Bears, Lemur and others. It’s not every day we get a project like this:
