Decorating with Film: A Commercial Solution

Decorating with Film: A Commercial Solution

02.20.17

Privacy is a top priority in the healthcare industry: Patient records, family and individual medical histories, pharmaceutical information, etc. Creating an environment that not only insists on privacy but also invites it. Johns Hopkins, one of the country’s leading health care systems in the US, is a giant in the industry but is located in the cozy city of Baltimore, Maryland.

Privacy extends to medical professionals at Johns Hopkins (and all medical facilities) throughout their workday. While it may not be obvious, having a work atmosphere that offers an open, inclusive design must also make privacy part of the design.

Frosted Glass + Decorative Film = Custom Design

There are more similarities between frosted glass and decorative film (on glass) than there are differences. Both are features that allow for light to pass through glass and both are decorative applications most found in commercial window designs. Jeffrey Brown, recently partnered with Film Room, a glass tinting company that serves the greater Baltimore, Maryland area, to apply a custom frosted window film to one of their conference rooms. The result was a distinguished and highly customized look – making the setting feel less like a hospital and more like an open, collaborative meeting space.

Frosted glass and decorative film in fact, are two different elements in custom glass projects:

Frosted glass

  • Opaque and provides maximum privacy
  • Do-it-yourself ‘shortcut’ applications are available but not recommended for commercial applications
  • Perfect solution for windows, glass doors, shower enclosures, mirrors, glass tables, cabinet doors and much more

Decorative film

  • Best described as ‘wallpaper for glass’
  • Different aesthetic effects include stained glass, patterns/finishes, architectural, light diffusing, rear projection and dry erase
  • Also available as do-it-yourself project, yet not recommended for commercial applications
  • Perfect solution for conference rooms, lobbies, retail settings, private offices, partitions and general decorative privacy

Knowing how to combine the form and function to create a customized glass design appropriate within the right setting is the end product (see inset). Whether for personal or commercial purposes, a professional glass tinting company will get it right every time.
